The Book of Jonah (Sefer Yona in the original Hebrew) is a primary text for Jews and for me in particular. When I converted to Judaism, I adopted a Hebrew name. My choice, Betzalel Yona, describes important aspects of my personality. Betzalel is identified as the primary artist of the first temple of worship for the wandering Hebrews of the bible. Yona represents my essential spiritual nature, especially as an artist and as a Jew; to ever be questioning and experiencing the life force that drives all of us. Yona is the part of me that must connect to the world on all of its levels, and recognizes this as a difficult task that leads both to frustration and revelation.
